Attention! Upcoming Changes to #Society6 – Information and Rant

Have you gotten an email from Society6 with planned changes? Well, I had not but thanks to an online friend who forwarded me the information, I can share it with you here:

Hello,
You are receiving this email because you are a valued member of the Society6 artist community. Today, we have updated our Terms of Service. By continuing to use the Society6 services on or after April 4, 2023, you are agreeing to the updated Terms.
Below is a summary of the key changes that will impact our artist community:
Shipping Fees: Effective May 4, 2023, when you make a sale through Society6.com, or one of our third-party affiliates, a shipping fee will be deducted from your earnings. Shipping fees vary based on the product sold and the full list of current fees can be found here.
Your artist earnings will be calculated using the following formula:
Artist Earnings = ((Base Price – Discount) x Markup) – Shipping Fee
While we don’t like implementing new fees, global shipping costs have risen significantly. To date, Society6 and our customers have absorbed those increases. The addition of these fees, which are a very small percentage of Society6’s overall shipping costs, will allow us to protect our customers’ experience and offer reasonable customer shipping rates which we believe will ultimately drive better sales for our artist community.
Verification Fee Change: Effective May 4, 2023, a $5 PayPal verification fee will be charged to create a new account.
Plus, Coming Soon! Artist Subscription Plans
In Fall 2023, Society6 will introduce annual subscription plans for artist accounts. This program will offer tiered plans, each with their own features and benefits. All artists will be required to select a plan to continue selling with Society6.
These plans will be designed to support our commitment to high-quality original artwork, improve the shopping experience, and allow us to offer enhanced services for the artist community at each tier. We look forward to sharing more about this new program in the coming months.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact us at s6.co/contact. If you wish to deactivate your account, you may do so here.
Thank you for being such an important part of Society6!
Sincerely,
The Society6 Artist Community
Really? This sucks on so many levels! First of all, earnings from Society6 were never big for me in the first place and now they will deduct a shipping fee from ARTISTS commission to compensate for increased shipping prices??? How crazy is this? Is my supermarket paying an extra fee every time I do buy something from them? No, they increase their prices so that customers pay the extra fee.
At this level of audacity I do expect all subscription plans to be paid. I doubt they will offer a free plan.
This really bugs me since I had uploaded most of my new AI Art exclusively on Society6 since it was the easiest uploader. Arrgh, weeks of work down the drain!

  1. I didn’t get the email either. I read a bit about their changes somewhere and then never could find that article again. Thank you so much for posting it here. I am taking my products off S6 and then will close my account. How about you? Are you going to stay?

  2. Hi there, thanks for sharing your thoughts.
I am still too angry with them to make a rational decision. I have contacted them through support telling them my thoughts – and am hoping that many artists do this. I haven’t sold anything in April yet to see how much the shipping fee really affects my earnings. I will probably not upload any new works and focus more on the other pod sites. The decision whether I will delete my stuff or not will be faced again in fall when S6 reveals their subscription plans. I will definitely not pay for any monthly plan.
